Sustainable Sourcing: Tresmontes Lucchetti and Bigda-Agro Host Third Central Chile Wheat Growers’ Meeting

17/04/2024

The event, which featured the participation of the Undersecretary of Agriculture, highlighted public-private collaboration as a key tool to address future challenges.

The Third Meeting of Wheat Growers from Central Chile was held at the San Fernando Country Club, organized by food company Tresmontes Lucchetti in partnership with Bigda-Agro, as part of their ongoing commitment to sustainable sourcing.

Throughout the day, various stakeholders in the wheat value chain shared their experiences, presented recent results, and discussed their perspectives on the future of the sector.

Tresmontes Lucchetti, with a long-standing commitment to resilient agriculture, participated with a booth at the event and led the main presentation. Pedro Pablo Lagos, the company’s Deputy Manager of Commodities, and Ignacio Ramírez, Wheat Purchasing Agent, addressed the challenges of the latest growing season and outlined the path toward sustainable and regenerative farming.

Pedro Pablo Lagos emphasized that, “One of the main challenges we face in the coming years is building agriculture that is resilient to various climate events. One way to achieve this is through regenerative agriculture, and ultimately to hand over healthier, more productive land to our children and grandchildren.”

A key highlight of the event was the long-standing partnership with the Agricultural Research Institute of Chile (INIA). Researcher Iván Matus noted, “INIA and Lucchetti have worked together since 1988 to support research into the development of durum wheat. Thanks to this partnership, this crop has remained in the hands of local growers for over 30 or 40 years, preserving their interest in cultivating it.”

Ignacia Fernández, Chile’s Undersecretary of Agriculture, stressed the importance of this collaboration: “This alliance is particularly critical in our efforts to protect traditional crops like durum wheat. It helps increase productivity and ensure stable yields. And more recently—since this is a long-term agreement—it has also become essential for tackling sustainability challenges and climate change adaptation in the sector.”

In addition to institutional alliances, Tresmontes Lucchetti also supports farmers directly. Local farmer Félix Riquelme shared, “What has helped us most are the talks and meetings held with all the growers. They’ve been very useful for learning about pricing, crop management, sustainability, and resilient farming practices.”

Through this event, Tresmontes Lucchetti reaffirms its commitment to sustainable sourcing, consolidating its role as a market leader and a strategic partner to producers and farmers across the country.
